Last Day for the Chase Community Giving Challenge

Today is the last day where you can help the National Inclusion Project receive a donation through the Chase Community Giving challenge. All you have to do is have a Facebook account and go to this page and vote!

This is how the National Inclusion Project can benefit:

Program Overview
From June 15, 2010 to July 12, 2010, users can vote for any Charity that is part of the Chase Community Giving application on the Facebook platform. On July 13, 2010, the votes will be tallied and the 200 eligible Charities receiving the most votes will be considered the top vote-getters of the Program and will share in $5,050,000 in donations from Chase.

Participating and Voting
NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO PARTICIPATE OR VOTE. During the voting period, Participants who allow "Access" and "Like" the Chase Community Giving application on the Facebook platform, may vote for Charities. Unless a Participant is the recipient of a Gift Vote, described below, each Participant will be limited to one (1) vote per Charity with a total of twenty (20) votes per valid user profile. Participants will earn an extra vote ("Gift Vote") after casting five (5) votes and a second Gift Vote again when they cast all twenty (20) votes (excluding Gift Votes). Gift Votes may only be sent to and used by another Participant who may use the Gift Vote to vote for any Charity, but may only vote for the same Charity no more than two (2) times.

Donations
Sponsor will donate $250,000 to the Charity receiving the most votes, $100,000 to each of the four runner-up Charities, and $20,000 to each of the remaining top 195 Charities receiving the most votes at the end of the Program; provided each winning Charity meets all eligibility requirements and standards. Sponsor will also donate combined total of $500,000 to the eligible Charity or Charities who have received at least one vote and are chosen by an advisory board designated by Sponsor (the "Advisory Board").

Tour dates for the Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard concerts have been posted!

Clay and Ruben "Timeless" Tour Dates Announced
After much anticipation and speculation, Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard confirmed today plans to tour North America. Kicking off July 23, 2010 in Asheville, North Carolina, Clay and Ruben will bring their “Timeless” tour to 17 cities including appearances at famed venues such as New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom, LA Nokia Live in Los Angeles, and Pennsylvania’s American Music Theater. This is the first time the two artists will tour together.

National Inclusion Project Announces Over $700,000 of Support for "Let's All Play"

The National Inclusion Project (NIP), co-founded by entertainer Clay Aiken, announces over $700,000 of support to programs nationwide as part of its Let’s ALL Play initiative.

In just three years, the Project has invested over $1.7 million to expand Let’s ALL Play across the country. Let’s ALL Play brings an inclusive recreational experience to children with disabilities by giving them the same experience as children without disabilities. Children with disabilities and their peers without disabilities come together to participate in recreational activities such as swimming, arts and crafts, community service, physical fitness and more. The Project will support over 45 recreational programs in 23 states in 2010.

In 2004, the Project instituted the inclusive recreational experience for children with and without disabilities. Since its inception, the Project has impacted over 20,000 children nationwide. "My son does not have Down syndrome, wear hearing aids, or have difficulty with his speech,” said the mother of a camper. “He is simply a camper."

In 2008, the NIP asked the Center for Social Development and Education at the University of Massachusetts Boston to assess the implementation of Let’s ALL Play. Overwhelming evidence shows that campers with disabilities see improvement in self-esteem, social skills, relationships with campers without disabilities, general engagement in camp activities and sport/motor skills.

The NIP looks to create communities where all children can learn, live and play together.

“Because of the continued support of our volunteers and supporters, the National Inclusion Project gives children the opportunity to experience inclusion for the first time,” said Aiken. “The children's experience will impact generations to come as they increase awareness of the importance of inclusion.”

Clay Aiken Performs Tonight!

When Clay Aiken hits the stage tonight at Memorial Auditorium, he will be performing for the couple of thousand people in the crowd, as well a future audience that could be much, much larger.

The concert, which will feature the first live performance of his coming album, "Tried and True," will be taped for a PBS special that will air this summer. It's a one-time-only deal, and Aiken, the Raleigh native and "American Idol" runner-up, will sing each song from the new album.

"Tried and True," scheduled for a late May release, is Aiken's first album for Decca Records. It's also the first in which he didn't feel record-company pressure to go in a pop-friendly direction. Working with Decca, he and longtime manager Simon Renshaw charted a different course for Aiken's career.

"Our idea was always to head toward a Johnny Mathis-y kind of thing," Aiken said recently during an interview in a downtown Raleigh coffee shop.

So the songs on "Tried and True" are lushly arranged classics. Aiken's hard-core fans will hear some familiar tunes, standards that he performed on "Idol." The new album includes "Unchained Melody" and "Mack the Knife."

Aiken, 31, has developed an adult audience over the years that he intends to keep. To that end, the album features a guest turn by saxophonist and label-mate David Sanborn on the Sammy Davis Jr. classic "What Kind of Fool Am I?" Vince Gill performs guitar on Andy Williams' legendary "Moon River."

Decca is known for signing artists who appeal to mature audiences. Bobby McFerrin, Placido Domingo and Ray Davies of The Kinks are among the performers who record for Decca. Aiken feels comfortable there.

"Adult audiences aren't fickle. That's who I've done well with in the past," he said. "This is a chance to do what I want to do, sing songs that I think are great and not try to put a square peg in a round hole."

Aiken will perform tonight with 15 or 20 musicians, a stripped-down ensemble from what was used to record the album. Part of the idea behind the concert is to see how a group of this size will perform the songs. If all goes well, Aiken could hit the road with a similar ensemble.

Whether he tours in the near future will depend largely on the economic atmosphere surrounding the touring business. But he has some ideas of what he'd like to do if an opportunity arises. Aiken and "Idol" winner Ruben Studdard have talked for years about creating a show together.

In the end, it will come down to economics. Tours are expensive to produce, and people don't go to as many concerts as they used to. Acts that aren't at the top of the pop charts can find it more difficult to make a dollar on the road

"I'm not Lady Gaga," he said, laughing.

Every year before the Golfing for Inclusion event in Florida, Clay performs for the members of the Mirasol Country Club Clubhouse. Usually we hear little about the performance, but tonight the fans were fortunate that a member tweeted about the performance and posted a picture!

Clay Aiken Hints At Possible Tour

Biting my tongue
As you all know.... holding my tongue is not one of my strongest qualities. It's been so tough to keep quiet on certain developments with regard to the album and all thats going on with it. Suffice it to say... we are almost finished with it and I LOVE it. I think you will too. These songs.. the arrangements.. these orchestrations are the most amazing I have ever gotten to record.

But ... how will you first hear it? Through the internet? In concert? On release day? One song at a time?

I can tell you this....that BIG news is coming very soon. And not "soon" as in the "soon" that you guys think I tend to subscribe to. Soon as in VERY soon.

You will want to be checking here EVERY day for the next several days or so. Big news! Big enough to through your lives and schedules and.. yes... maybe even your travel agents' schedules into a frenzy!

Speculate all you want. But... be ready. Things may start moving fast!

Clay Aiken: Blogs An Update on Somalia

In it he gives an update on the situation in Somalia.

There's no question that years of civil war and a defunct central government has left much of this nation dangerously unstable. In fact, half the population of Somalia remains internally displaced and in a state of humanitarian emergency.

This tragic reality affects an estimated 3.6 million people, half of whom are children. Over 1.5 million are displaced as a result of conflict, largely between Islamic extremists and government forces. Not only is this population burdened by violence and instability, but also extreme poverty and recurrent food shortages.[...]

Clay Aiken Responds to Allegations of Voter Fraud

Today, Clay Aiken responded to allegations that he was guilty of voter fraud. But before we get to that, I would like to give you a little background about what led up to this response.

On November 12, Clay blogged on his official fan site and among other things, happened to make this comment:

What happened to Wake County Schools?!?1 Now that i have a kid i am so much more invested and I am EXTREMELY disappointed that so many selfish idiots ran and won seats on the school board. i hope we can get rid of them as soon as possible before they ruin my school system. Idiots.

Obviously some strong feelings about an issue that meant a great deal to him. In retaliation, the Wake County Republican Party on Friday challenged Clay's vote in this fall's school board elections - going so far as to actually scheduling a hearing tomorrow in order to challenge his voting registration in Wake County. Do they do this for every resident whom they feel may not qualify to vote in the county?

In any case, here is Clay's response to all the hoopla:

Responding to foolishness
I’ve always considered Wake County “home.” Growing up here taught me values like looking beyond the color of another’s skin and speaking up for those who cannot speak for themselves. I hold Wake County and its values dear.

Recently, I expressed my views and concern about the direction in which the newly elected members of the School Board propose to take Wake County schools. In a private blog, I stated strong opposition to the campaign rhetoric of the newly elected Board members. In response, the Wake County Republican Party has challenged my voter registration in Wake County.

It just goes to show the lengths to which some folks will go to silence an opposing view. I’ve remained registered at the permanent address that I’ve long used here in Wake County because I consider Raleigh home. While I believe my registration is perfectly valid, I’ve decided to change my registration from Wake County rather than get into a technical dispute.

But, rest assured, this attack on my voter registration will not silence me. I may not be able to effect change through my vote, but I will join other concerned citizens in speaking truth to those who would reverse decades of progress in Wake County schools. I stand by my opposition to policies that threaten to resegregate schools and eliminate diversity. These policies will not prepare children for the larger world.

Policies based on campaign rhetoric will leave behind the very children who need help the most. I urge the newly elected School Board members to consider the needs of all Wake County school children, not just a few. Wake County was a special place to grow up, and remains a great American community, because of its diversity, because of its progressive schools, because people take care of each other.

I urge the new board members to slow down, look beyond their own campaign agenda, and begin to govern responsibly with the needs of all children in mind. If they do not, the people of Wake County will hold them accountable. Regardless of my own voter registration, I will continue to speak up for all children of a place I will always consider home.

New day!
By now you've seen the new National Inclusion Project website and hopefully you are exploring it. One thing that you will come across as you are looking around is something that I am most excited about: the new Bubel/Aiken Founder's Award.

As the website states, it's an award that will be given for outstanding volunteer service to be given annually beginning with the 2009 Champions Gala on October 17, 2009. It was through grassroots volunteer efforts that the National Inclusion Project was started and it is through those efforts that we have been able to make such huge strides for inclusion nationwide.

The award will recognize a person or group who fully embraces the mission of the National Inclusion Project and makes an "above and beyond" effort to raise awareness and support year-round. The staff and Board will be choosing finalists from the nominations that YOU submit, and Diane and I will be selecting the winner personally each year from what I know will be a tremendous amount of qualified and deserving nominees.

You guys have been SOOOOO instrumental in making the organization as successful as it has been this past six years.. and we strongly feel it's important to recognize the folks who we all know have worked so hard. YOU!

In traveling for UNICEF these past four years, I've really been given a great opportunity to see first hand how fortunate we are in this country to have some of the rights we have. It makes celebrating the birth of our nation more poignant when I think about those in countries who don't have some of the basic freedoms that we take for granted. If you see a service man or woman today thank them for the role they play (or have played) in making sure that the dream and vision that our founding fathers had 233 years ago has stayed intact.

Clay Aiken Was Not Dropped By The Bubel/Aiken Foundation

Recently there was a false rumor spread about Clay Aiken's standing with his own foundation. After the new name for the foundation was prematurely released, it was falsely presumed by a few that it meant that Clay Aiken was "dropped" by the foundation. However, the presumption was irrational at best since Clay is the foundation. He runs it. If he was "dropped" by it, he would have to drop himself. In any case, RadarOnline.com posted an exclusive statement from Jerry Aiken which clarifies the situation:

Only On Radar: Clay Aiken Not Nixed By Charity
Clay Aiken is not being axed by the charity he helped co-found despite internet rumors saying so, his uncle confirms to RadarOnline.com. The former American Idol star was supposedly being ditched by The B[a]ubel Aiken Foundation which recently filed papers to change their name to The National Inclusion Project.

“There have been a lot of rumors out there but Clay is very much still involved with this organization,” Jerry Aiken- who works for the charity- said. “Both he and co-founder Diane B[a]ubel will remain on the board of directors and they are committed to the charity. We are simply changing the name to simplify things to a name that represents more of what we are about.”

“A lot of people had problems pronouncing the previous name and hopefully the new title will help us with promoting our cause further. But Clay is still very much part of our future plans too.”

According to local records the foundation has registered themselves with the North Carolina Secretary Of State’s office under the new name The National Inclusion Project, Inc. The original foundation grew out of a relationship between Aiken and B[a]ubel whose son Michael B[a]ubel suffers from autism.

It is well known by the fans that Clay has been talking about the new name change for a long time and has been very enthusiastic about the change and even asked the fans for suggestions for the new name.

Congratulations to the Foundation on its new name and may it continue to be successful in promoting inclusion and bridging the gap that exists between young people with special needs and the world around them.

It is unfortunate that RadarOnline.com misspelled the name "Bubel".

Clay Aiken Blogs About The Media Response To His Statements About American Idol

Clay Aiken posted a blog yesterday in response to all the controversy his previous blog about American Idol stirred up. Here is the blog:

Wow! Such influence! ha ha

Who knew I had so much influence and that my words and opinion mattered so much to so many people!?!?! HA HA HA I’ll be the first to admit that my opinion is just that, only my opinion, but for as much as some of the bloggers seem to dislike me and care so little about my thoughts, they sure can waste a lot of their space on what I say! If only many of them took the time to pay attention to important things like the US economy and the welfare of the world’s children. But… nah… I could blog about that type of stuff anytime and most wouldn’t think twice, but let me say something that they can pick and choose quotes and misinterpret me… and it’s showtime! I never assumed my opinion mattered so much! I guess I may have been wrong.

   That said, since my previous blog got dissected like a biology lab frog, i suppose I should clarify and even retract some of what I wrote.

   I am sure that some were upset by my choice of words describing my opinion of a performance I heard from Adam Lambert. I hope no one actually believed that blood truly poured forth from my ears when I heard him. I obviously meant it as a colorful statement to imply that I did not enjoy what I heard. Any performer hopes that their music will appeal to all people, but no singer realistically expects it to. God knows, I am SURE there are PLENTY of people who can’t stand to hear me sing either. I wouldn’t dream of assuming that, and I am sure that far worse things have been said about my performances than I would even venture to type here. To me, that’s fine. I don’t expect unanimous, nor even majority support for my music. But, my guess is Adam doesn’t either. I would not venture to make judgements on the personality or demeanor of anyone I don’t know, so none of what I said in my previous blog was directed as a “slam” on Adam as a person. At the same time, I wouldn’t dream of slamming him as an entertainer. He does what he does, because he enjoys it, and he obviously has many fans who enjoy it as well. If what i said in my previous blog regarding my impression of a single performance from Adam upset or offended any of his fans, I expect that the mature ones will realize that it was simply a poorly worded metaphor describing my personal tastes. The only person I would really dream of apologizing to is Adam. And the irony is, if he’s smart he couldn’t give a crap what I think of his Ring of Fire performance. As an entertainer, Adam knows that one person’s opinion of one performance really matters a little less than zero, in the grand scheme of things. He could not have gotten on Idol (nor made it as far as he did) without an immense amount of talent. He surely doesn’t need my approval to know he has a gift. At the same time, he realizes that amazing talent doesn’t always equal universal appeal. (I could NEVER have the amount of skill and talent that ballet dancers have! that’s talent! But, I don’t particularly enjoy it!) I am sure that I will have plenty of opportunities in the coming years to hear Adam sing. I imagine he’ll be around for years to come. But in the meantime, I definitely don’t want to stoop to the level of so many negative freaks on the internet… so, I do apologize to Adam for my colorful (and negative) choice of words. I hope he can forgive me. I imagine he doesn’t give a damn! :-) God knows he shouldn’t. :-)

   Now, for those of you who are able to comment on this…. lets take bets as to which bits and pieces of this blog will end up mass distributed. Be creative…. they don’t seem to care about punctuation or whether or not they use all of the words in a sentence… so, have fun…. ;-)

Clay Aiken Blogs About American Idol

There has been quite a stir in the news over Clay Aiken's opinion about American Idol. Normally I wouldn't post one of his private blogs, but it has already been spread all over the internet. I decided to go ahead and post it because some sites chose to quote only parts of it and I think it is important that all his comments be read in context. So here is his blog. Enjoy!

Now that it's all over, and for the record.... I couldn't be happier about the way AI ended this year. I only turn the show on once a season, and only to see what the set looks like each year. This year, I happened to turn it during the minute that Adam Lambert was singing "Ring of Fire" and, at that moment, thought my ears would bleed. Contrived, awful, and slightly frightening! I wasn't really a fan and found myself surprised whenever folks told me that they liked him. Granted, I never saw another performance (and many folks who I trust said that he was great) but I can't imagine I would have enjoyed it. Just not my cup of tea at all. To each his own. I never saw Kris sing on the show, but whether he was good or not is really relative. It's usually a matter of taste, right? But Idol is not always a matter of musical taste only. It's about the person you like. From what little I saw, Kris seemed likable. (That's not to say that Adam isn't just as likable as anyone.. maybe more so... I don't know) When Ruben and I were standing next to each other every night (many years ago) you had two equally talented, equally unlikely, equally unpolished contestants.... so it really was a matter of taste as to who was voted for. While some may argue that one of us was hyped more than the other, I don't feel that was the case. However, this year, there was an obvious bias. Not even having watched the show, I can tell you that I was WELL aware of the bias from the judges as to who should win. In my opinion, that is awfully unattractive. I don't think I am alone.

In my opinion, it all often comes down to that last night of voting. Until the finale, folks are voting for the contestant that they want to see continue. But, I believe that on that last night, the dynamic changes. No longer forced to choose one person that they want to see win, the audience can effectively vote AGAINST the person that they don't want to see win. In the case of season two this might have happened. There may have been some folks who voted for myself or Ruben because they didn't like the other of us. I was the nerdy little girly boy who some didn't want to see win, so they may have voted for Ruben. I don't know. .. But again, I feel that Ruben and I were fairly matched. We both had our detractors and negatives, but I feel we were both very worthy of being on that stage in that moment, and either of us would have been worthy of winning. The show was different then, and folks made it in seasons 1-3 because they were "real" people who happened to sing/entertain well. But, somewhere along the way, AI stopped being about real people and started being about "fame" and "gloss"; It stopped being about the talented kid-next-door and started being about who was most marketable. (I don't think anyone would have argued in 2003 that Ruben or I were extremely marketable.) So, this year it was not like 2003. This year it all came down to two contestants so extremely different and mis-matched.... one that was so obviously the "favorite"... so hyped and polished and "ready for market"; who (accurately or inaccurately) came off to many as arrogant and superior ... and one kid who no one thought had a chance and (accurately or inaccurately) came off as humble and real.

In a battle between David and Goliath, my money is on David!

I think many voters got sick of being "told who to vote for". I think many were turned off by the blatant favoritism shown towards one contestant. Therefore, on that last night, they used their votes against a contestant that they were tired of hearing about and for the contestant who had been written off. And, at the same time, I think they voted AGAINST an American Idol that has, for four years now, been more about the slick productions and polished contestants than it has been about finding the raw talent that it did in its first three seasons.

Those votes for Kris were also votes to return the show to its roots of finding "real" contestants with undiscovered talent and giving them the chance to grow and shine. They were votes that said "we're tired of seeing contestants who already seem to know it all".

Will American Idol choose to listen to the resounding and clarion call that those voters gave them?.... "Enough with the pretention. More Rubens, more Clays, more Fantasias and Tamyras and Kellys please." My faith has always been in the voters. I think they have gotten it right every year (mine included). It's now up to American Idol to decide if it will finally REALLY listen to the folks that keep it on the air.

Frankly, I'm rather puzzled at all the commotion over his statements. It is not like he is saying anything that a lot of other people haven't also stated elsewhere.

"What do Clay Aiken and Kanye West have in common?" Sounds like the start of some kind of joke.... but it isn't.

CNN just did a story on someone posing as Kanye West on Twitter. Apparently, some losers think it's funny to pretend to be other people (sometimes famous people) online. This is not old news to us, as it's been happening to me for years. But it made me realize that I have not yet informed you of something that you probably already know.

I am NOT on Twitter. (In fact, i think the legalized stalking that Twitter seems to be used for so often is repulsive) I think Twitter is the devil. I know you probably realize this already... but.. if you think you're following me on Twitter (or anywhere other than this site) it's not me.

Just a guess, but I suspect that this is in response to the current rumors about Clay's recent visit to the American Idol set. In reality, he took his son to go visit some friends who work there. No more... no less. It was not a ploy to try to weasel his way on the show or to meet with the contestants. I don't know why it is so important to some "journalists" to make up these stories, but it really speaks to the sad state of journalism when they make up or blindly quote such fiction. Can't believe everything you read anymore.

Last Saturday Clay Aiken was a special guest on the reprise of David Foster's hugely popular "David Foster and Friends" show at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas. He performed along with such stellar artists such as Heather Headley, Brian McKnight, Peter Cincotti and the up and coming star, Charice. There was also surprise appearances by Donny Osmond and Cher.

Yesterday Clay Aiken initiated a question and answer session on his official fan club message board. It was quite exciting as he spent several hours answering all kinds of questions posed by the fans. And to top it off, he posted a blog giving the fans the ultimate gift... a new song! He has freely given us the song "Just You" that he recorded for the album "A Thousand Different Ways." Here is a quote from the blog:

Well folks… truth is.. . I did. Long ago. As a matter of fact It was one of the first songs we recorded for the album A Thousand Different Ways. It was recorded before the label asked me to do the album of cover love songs and before the budget was officially approved, so I actually paid for it myself. Then, as I recall, when the decision was made to do the cover album, the label opened a budget for the album, but it did not include reimbursing me for songs I had recorded that did not fit the concept. So, here I have had this song all along that, to my knowledge, I own the only copy of. What to do with it.. what to do? Well, this evening (with some encouragement from Jaymes) I decided…. let’s just give it to them. Why not? We do have plans (which we will tell you about eventually) to be back in the studio and record in the near future, but until then… you might as well get a bit of something you haven’t been able to hear in a while. “New” music.

Now… here’s the deal. I want to give it to you because you deserve it. You’ve stuck by me and been patient for a long time. But, also, I really have to give it to you. Since I didn’t write it or produce it, I can’t sell it to you… but I hate to encourage getting music for free. You all have always been SOOOO ethical when it has come to downloading music. I know my fans are probably some of the most scrupulous in the country and I believe that you never steal music. That said… We are gonna do this on the “honor system”… Go ahead…. download the song. It’s yours. Share it with your friends. It’s free. But… I want to make it count for someone… so let’s make it count for tens of thousands of children in the US with developmental disabilities If you can’t afford anything for it.. then don’t pay… but… if you can… I encourage you… I ask of you… that you make a donation to the Bubel/Aiken Foundation for how ever much you feel the song is worth. If you want to give $1… great. If you want to give $1000… GREAT… if you can only give $.05 … that’s fine too. It’s a tough time we’re living through nowadays, and non-profits are hurting more than ever as well. BAF (which will soon be known by a different name) has had amazing success in fulfilling it’s mission, and is embarking on a long term plan to continue including kids in every aspect of life. But, it will continue to need help from all of us in order to make that possible.

On March 13, the New York Daily News reported that Clay Aiken, Mary J. Blige and Elvis Costello were spotted on the set of 30 Rock. And today Clay blogged to confirm that he will be appearing on the show and indicated that it will be the season finale which is scheduled to air May 14.

While we are waiting to see Clay on 30 Rock, don't forget that he will be appearing on America's Next Top Model on April 8. Clay will be participating in an acting challenge and as a guest judge. And according to an interview with TVGuide.com, Tyra said:

GLAAD has issued a press release announcing the 20th Annual GLAAD Media Awards. They feature that Clay Aiken will be presenting the Excellence in Media Award to Tyra Banks.

Special Recognition awards will be presented to Phil Donahue and The Laramie Project, 10 Years Later - The Lasting Legacy of Matthew Shepard, a two-hour documentary broadcast on Sirius XM Radio.

Actor and singer Clay Aiken will present the Excellence in Media Award to Tyra Banks. Watch Out for Facebook Imposters

Apparently there is an imposter on Facebook pretending to be Clay Aiken. Clay blogged about it upon becoming aware of the ruse. Here is his message:

Hate to burst your bubble.
While it may be tough to hear... I have not "friended" any of y'all on Facebook.

Thanks to a few good friends, I've discovered that someone is pretending to be me on there. BIG SHOCKER! And though, I normally ignore such BS, I've learned that this person (who obviously has too much time on their hands) is being inappropriately rude with some fans, and that pisses me off a bit! ;-)

While I do have a Facebook page, I have opted to keep it pretty private and really only use it rarely to keep in touch with my "Spam-Fam", my LA peeps, and a few longtime friends from home. Just wanted to make you aware... if you've "friended" me on Facebook, you've "friended" a wacko and a poser.

If you wanna stay friends with a wacko and a poser, feel free... but I know y'all have much higher standards! ;-)

Be careful and watch out for imposters. There are a number of them out there!

Clay Aiken Leaves RCA

There has been a lot of buzz lately about Clay's disappearing presence on the RCA website. The fans noticed it quite a while ago, but the gossip bloggers belatedly found out about it yesterday. And of course, put the worse possible spin on it. But now, Clay has confirmed it officially with PEOPLE:

...Clay Aiken is setting the record straight: the former American Idol has parted ways with RCA Records, Aiken's rep has confirmed exclusively to PEOPLE.

"We were unable to come to terms in a recent contract negotiation, and decided that it was best to move on," the rep, Cindi Berger, said Friday. ...

So, it is official folks. Clay has left RCA. And contrary to what some sites have reported, most fans are very happy at this turn of events. Many have felt that RCA was not supporting Clay's work as much as they could have. It is going to be interesting to see where Clay goes from here.

It has been confirmed that Clay will be a guest judge during the next cycle of America's Next Top Model. Posted on Clay's MySpace blog:

Yes it’s true, Clay Aiken will be appearing in the upcoming season of “America’s Next Top Model.” He will participate in an acting challenge with the ladies and serve as a guest judge on the panel. The April 8 episode featuring Clay will air on the CW as part of the series' 12th cycle that kicks off Feb. 25. Check your local listings and make sure to tune in!

Making a Difference

Clay Aiken has always been an advocate for making a difference, and he has worked hard to achieve that goal. Here are some of the projects he currently has under way:

The Broadway Bears XII
Clay has been very supportive of the Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS organization. Currently the BC/EFA will be holding their annual Broadway Bears auction on Sunday, February 15, 2009, but you can now bid on the bears on their online pre-auction which will close on Saturday, February 14 at 2:00 PM EST. The bid for the Spamalot bear, signed by Clay Aiken, stands right now at $4,600.

Sir Robin has found his grail - and "what's that?" Why, "musical theatre"! So here, finale-ready, is Sir Robin Bear, an exact replica of his Broadway counterpart, all set to be a song-and-dance man. And he does have "the loveliest [of] costumes and the best shoes," doesn't he? He wears a white piqué shirt and cream-satin, green and silver (hand-)bugle-beaded double-bow tie under his 3-piece cream suit. His teal-lined cutaway jacket is an Italian wool-gabardine. Those wide lapels are hand-beaded with 375 peridot, green and silver bugle beads. Handmade Swarovski-crystal and rhinestone buttons decorate the jacket-front and long sleeves. His matching pants have a cream satin stripe running down the outside of either leg. And his cream-satin vest has been hand-beaded in a bold green-and-white checkerboard pattern. It was created with 1,076 peridot, kelly green and silver bugle beads, and 80 peridot Swarovski-crystal rhinestones. Not to mention the matching buttons! On his feet are silver-and-white leather spectators with Swarovski-crystal rhinestones trimming the toes. See? The "best shoes"! Atop that softly curled strawberry-blond (synthetic) wig is his debonair, cream-satin top hat. The hatband, by the way, is made of (hand-painted) green and silver rhinestones. More than 30 hours of blood, sweat and love went into hand-beading the more-than 1500 beads and crystals on this tiny suit. To the more than "small percentile who enjoys a dancing gentile": they don't come any finer than Sir Robin. This bear's for you!

Together We Make A Difference
The Bubel/Aiken Foundation and The Institute on Community Integration have teamed up together with a new inclusive service learning program called Together We Make a Difference.

The two organizations have been working on developing this program for the last three years funded by a grant of $190,400 from TBAF. Their goal is to encourage all young people in service learning and to teach social and life skills to all children. Their first program is called Together We Make a Difference: An Inclusive Service Learning Curriculum for Elementary Learners With and Without Disabilities. Later on this year there will be two other programs launched.

The Dancing Wheels Company
The Dancing Wheels Company and School has just received an award in support of their school.

In the 2008/2009 season, The Dancing Wheels Company received a significant award from The Bubel/Aiken Foundation to help fulfill their mission of creating communities where ALL children can learn, live, and play together. The Dancing Wheels Company was one of over 100 applicants selected this year to promote the Foundation’s mission of inclusion.

The Dancing Wheels Company has long been recognized for its award winning, fully integrated in school assembly and residency programs across the nation. Through an artistic approach, the Company dispels myths about disability and the arts and creates an entertaining and valuable message to thousands of children with and without disabilities each year throughout America.

2009 Golfing For Inclusion

On January 26, 2009 Clay Aiken and PGA Professional Wayne Player hosted the 2nd Annual Golfing For Inclusion event to benefit the Bubel/Aiken Foundation.

The night before the event, Clay performed a mini-concert at the Mirasol Country Club.

The actual event started the next morning at 10 a.m. with a brunch and golf clinic taught by Wayne Player and then the golfers went on to play on the Mirasol golf course.

Then that evening was the buffet dinner, auction, speeches by the foundation founders and a performance by Clay. It is estimated that at least $60,000 was raised at the auction.

Clay, along with Ben Cohn at the keyboard, performed a selection of songs including, I Don’t Have The Heart To Hurt You, Mandy, Proud of Your Boy, This Is the Moment, and Right Here Waiting.

And here is an article with some quotes from Clay. Other than they reported the wrong songs and that Jaymes is not a surrogate, a nice mention for the event:

Clay Aiken is no 'Idol' on the golf course
It's ironic that Clay Aiken hosted a golf tournament for his Bubel/Aiken Foundation that helps send kids with disabilities to camp. Because the former American Idol contestant has no idea how to play.

''My game is wicked,'' Aiken admitted from the Mirasol Country Club in Palm Beach Gardens Monday. "I just tip the ball in. I don't have the patience. I think my handicap is like 7,000!''

Mini-golf is a different story.

''I could impress you with that,'' said the 30-year-old crooner. "But let's be honest: Any sport that involves windmills isn't real.''

Though Aiken has little patience to even watch Tiger Woods' game ("Unless you get a hole in one, I'm like, gotta go!''), he's passionate about the tourney's cause. Before making it big on AI, the North Carolina native was a special-ed teacher.

The flagging economy didn't hurt turnout to the $500-a-head Golfing for Inclusion event. ''I hated to ask for money now,'' said Aiken, who just wrapped a Broadway run of Spamalot. "We were worried.''

But for the price of admission, golfers got to hear him sing such classics as I Can't MakeYou Love Me, When a Man Loves a Woman and Unchained Melody.

The out-and-proud Aiken didn't have much time to hang out in South Florida. He's a dad now (Parker, with the help of surrogate mom/pal Jaymes Foster, was born in August). Though he admits Foster's the one who's getting up for nighttime feedings.

''It's a team effort, sure,'' he said. "But she's the mom and obviously doing more of the work.''

Clay Aiken's Message on The ONE Blog

The ONE Blog received a blog post by Clay Aiken from UNICEF stating his support for UNICEF's partnership with ONE. After talking about the good work ONE and UNICEF have done, he goes on to say:

...But I have also seen children sick and dying from lack of basic nutrition and medicines. And I cannot forget that despite UNICEF’s work, 25,000 children die every day, mostly from preventable causes. I believe that number should be “zero”– no child dying unnecessarily.

All of us can help to save children’s lives – individuals, nonprofits, corporations, and governments.

A bit quiet in Clayland right now, but there are a few news tidbits.

There was a sighting last night. Clay Aiken and a group of friends were spotted at the War Memorial Arena in Greensboro, NC attending the show "Ain't Misbehavin'" starring his good friend Ruben Studdard and fellow American Idol alumni Frenchie Davis and Trenyce Cobbins.

The official clayaiken.com website has been taken offline and redirected to Clay's clayonline.com site where his official fan club site is. Not sure what that portends, but it does make one go, "Hmmmm."

And a nice bit of fan news. A very talented fan, Maplestik, had created a few months ago a photo montage of President-elect Obama and his wife using Clay's song "Something About Us." It has been a hit on Youtube and now will be shown at one of the Inaugual Balls on January 20. How cool is that? If you haven't seen it yet, here it is below:

For each of the final 12 days of 2008 a UNICEF Ambassador or supporter is posting a message on the UNICEF Fieldnotes blog. Today was Clay Aiken's post bringing to our attention how UNICEF helps children suffering difficulty in continuing their education due to emergency situations from natural disasters or strife.

He informs us that:

According to an email sent out by The Bubel/Aiken Foundation, we can expect to see Clay Aiken on "The Waiting List" (Fox News Channel) on December 27 at 10pm EST.

Over 4000 children served in inclusive programs nationwide through Let's ALL Play, helping to launch a new leadership initiative with Best Buddies, our first Golfing for Inclusion event, and our most successful Champions of Change gala ever. Clay Aiken Talks About His Life Now and What He Is Doing Next

The People website has posted a nice interview with Clay Aiken. After talking some about the momentous changes in his life this year, he goes on to tell us about some of his plans for the near future:

As for his life as a new parent, Aiken will return to full-time fatherhood – joining Foster, 50, in his native North Carolina – after Jan. 4, when he finishes his run on Broadway as Sir Robin in Monty Python's Spamalot.

"I want to spend time with Parker. He's still uber-dependent," Aiken says, laughing. "I'm ready for him to start talking. I'm ready for a little action!"

But Claymates need not worry: Aiken will return to his singing roots: "We'll take a little bit of time, we're not quitting or anything, we're just gonna take it slow for a month or so and recollect once I get back," he says. "I may never have any free time once Parker starts walking and talking!"

Can't wait to see what he plans to do next!

Entertainment Tonight Talks to Clay About Spamalot and Fatherhood (video)

ETonline has posted video of their backstage interview with Clay Aiken where he discusses returning to Spamalot, fatherhood and coming out to the world. They did air a teaser last Friday that the interview would be on ET today. We will see!

ET's Jann Carl goes one-on-one with Clay Aiken, who talks candidly about being a doting daddy to his baby son Parker, and about his decision to come out to the world as a gay man.

Clay is back on Broadway, reprising his starring role of Sir Robin in Monty Python's Spamalot. The multi-talented music man tells Jann he actually returned to the stage to enjoy more family time at home with three-and-a-half-month-old Parker and the baby's mother -- Clay's good friend -- Jaymes Foster.

The "American Idol" finalist also admits he was "terrified" about performing on Broadway the week after he revealed his sexual identity, fearing he'd get booed off the stage. Naturally, he drew the opposite reaction -- rousing cheers and applause -- instead.

Rosie's pal Clay Aiken expressed his support for Rosie's show.

The "American Idol" alum also tells ET about his new son, saying, "He's doing well -- we're looking forward to our first Christmas together."

Ever have a question for one of the stars of one of Broadway's biggest hit shows and could not corner them at the stage door to ask? Well, one of Broadway's newest stars is none other than Clay Aiken who soared to fame following a very successful run on American Idol during one of the show's earlier seasons. The very talented star continues to shine on Broadway at The Shubert Theatre every night where he is currently reprising his role as the dashing Sir Robin in Monty Python's Spamalot. The generous Mr. Aiken has agreed during one of his busiest 2-show Saturdays to conduct a talk-back: "Conversation With Clay" at the Shubert Theatre where the public may pay to come in and sit and chat with him as a group and ask all the questions that time allows.

Holleman vs. Aiken: North Carolina Court of Appeals Decision

The North Carolina Court of Appeals has filed a decision on the appeal for the Holleman vs. Aiken case:

According to the amended complaint filed in this action, plaintiff is an author who has written a book about singer Clay Aiken (“Mr. Aiken”). Most of plaintiff's claims arise out of her publication of a book about Mr. Aiken and her hope to have Mr. Aiken, as well as his mother and close friends, endorse and promote her book. Plaintiff has sued Mr. Aiken and other defendants, on various legal theories, based primarily upon their refusal to endorse her book. In addition to requests for compensatory and punitive damages, plaintiff asked the court to issue a mandatory injunction, requiring Mr. Aiken and other individuals to endorse, promote, and even assist in selling her book. For the reasons as stated below, we affirm the dismissal of these claims. Our courtscannot be used to force celebrities or their family or friends into making endorsements for another person's profit.

Unrelated to her claims regarding her book, plaintiff also alleged two claims for battery, both arising out of an encounter between Mr. Aiken's bodyguard and plaintiff, when the bodyguard sought to remove plaintiff from a chair next to Mr. Aiken. For the reasons as stated below, we reverse the order dismissing the battery claims only as to Mr. Aiken.

Plaintiff appeals the trial court order granting defendants' motion to dismiss pursuant to North Carolina Rule of Civil Procedure 12(b)(6). The dispositive question before this Court is whether the trial court erred in concluding that plaintiff failed to state any claim against any defendants upon which relief could be granted. For the reasons stated below, we affirm in part and reverse in part the trial court's order dismissing plaintiff's claims.

Basically, this means that the Appeals court upholds the decision rendered by the lower court on all points except for the claims of battery against the bodyguard.

This ruling only gives her the right to sue in the lower court on the issue of battery by Jerome as Clay's agent and to seek compensation on that issue alone. It still has to be proven that the battery actually took place and that Clay instructed Jerome to batter her. The dismissal of all the other claims were upheld - including all the issues concerning the book.

Clay Aiken Talks About the Jennifer Hudson Tragedy (video)

ETonline talked to Clay recently about the recent tragedy in Jennifer Hudson's family:

In a recent interview with ET's Jann Carl, "American Idol" runner-up Clay Aiken opened up on Jennifer Hudson's recent family tragedy.

"There's no words that you can find to give somebody like that. I don't even know where to begin, I've been upset by this myself," Clay said

Clay also knows that the Hudson family loss has been felt all over the country. "I know the whole country's thoughts and prayers are with her and her entire extend family ... and anyone who was touched by her mother, or her brother, or her nephew."

The new dad also tells Jann that he hopes that individuals responsible are found so that Jennifer and her loved ones can find some closure.

Playbill Biography Contest Winner Announced

Broadwayworld.com has announced the winner of Clay Aiken's “Write Clay’s Playbill Biography Contest” winner. Members of his fan club were given the opportunity to compete to write Clay's biography featured in Spamalot's Playbill.

This winner is Jo-Anne Lopez of Carlsbad, California and below is her winning entry:

Clay Aiken was born southwest of Finland, in Raleigh, NC, a little more than 29 years ago. Although his younger years were spent belting out tunes from atop piles of Sears carpet samples, his mature teenage years saw him cast in musical theater roles such as Singer #2 in his high school production of The Music Man which was met with enough success not to get him cast in his final high school production. His ego thus bolstered, he had more than enough incentive to audition for “American Idol” Season 2, the outcome of which (in the prophetic #2 spot) has made him arguably the most beloved and successful contestant ever to have irritated Simon Cowell. A best-selling book, UNICEF Ambassadorship and multiple platinum recordings later, six or seven sold-out nationwide tours notwithstanding, and after a first very successful run in Spamalot early this year, Clay is currently finding his second grail, on Broadway, right here at the Shubert. For his next project, he plans to teach a modern Torah class.

The Bubel/Aiken Foundation's Fifth Annual Champions of Change Gala

Tonight was the Fifth Annual Champions Of Change Gala by The Bubel/Aiken Foundation. After the speeches presented by Lynda Loveland, Diane Bubel and Clay Aiken -- Clay and Diane presented the Champions of Change Award to Dan Habib and Betsy McNamara for their documentary "Including Samuel." You can see a preview of "Including Samuel" below:

Also receiving awards were Rich Donovan for applying his world-class business acumen to creating means of empowerment for people with disabilities and CVS Caremark as a Corporate Champion of Change for their outstanding efforts to improve the lives of children with disabilities.

After the award ceremony there was a live auction that brought in a total of $207,000 which is exclusive of the donations received by the raffle and the silent auction. A couple of highlights from the live auction were the leather Jukebox Tour jacket, which went for $56,000, and the Celine Dion Concert Box tickets (with a visit to the box from Clay) which went for $37,000.

The evening concluded with a special performance by Clay. He sang "When I See You Smile", "Where I Draw The Line", "Everything I Don't Need", "On My Way Here", and "Right Here Waiting."

Spamalot Will Close on Broadway in January

According to Playbill, Monty Python's Spamalot will end its reign at Broadway's Shubert Theatre on January 18, 2009 which is just two weeks after Clay finishes with his current engagement there on January 4, 2009. Fans are wondering if he will extend his run to be there until the show closes or if there is another project in the works that will prevent him from doing so. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

According to Playbill, when Spamalot closes, the musical will have played a total of 35 previews and 1,582 regular performances. It will have grossed over $175,000,000 and will have been seen by more than two million people. Spamalot earned the 2005 Tony Award for Best Musical and took home honors for direction (Mike Nichols) and one of its stars (Sara Ramirez).

The Bubel/Aiken Foundation is currently accepting online bids for select items that will be available at the 5th annual Champions of Change Gala. Go here for a preview of some of the items available in the auctions. Select items are available for bid online. Auction proceeds will further support the Foundation’s mission of inclusion for all children.

Bidding Information - If you wish to bid on an item, please send an email with the title "Gala Auction Bid -" and the item description to contactus@bubelaiken.org. Please submit ONE bid per email. Any bids under the minimum bids will not be counted. In the body of your email, list the item, your bid, your name, email address, and mailing address. Bidding will end at 11:59pm on Friday, October 17. Winners will be notified by Wednesday, October 22. Instructions and payment information will be given then. We will update the site regularly with the highest bid. The highest internet bid will become the minimum bid at either the silent auction and will be treated as a sealed bid at the live auction. If no one bids higher at the gala, the highest internet bidder will be awarded the prize. There will be a 2% shipping surcharge added to the item. Clay Aiken Tidbits: A Sighting and Some New Spamalot Pictures

Just a couple of little things today. Katrina Szish, InStyle's National Correspondent, posted a Clay sighting on her blog, Style Spy:

That's right -- I ran into Clay last night at my local market. The singing sensation -- and recent People cover boy -- was filling his basket with bananas and Chef Boyardee ravioli. I asked him about his self-professed favorite (Breyers peach ice-cream), and he laughed and said, "I didn't get any. I'm getting fat!"

Always friendly and always down-to-Earth, Aiken perused the store wearing jeans, an argyle sweater and sandals with socks.

And Broadwayworld.com has posted some new photos of the Spamalot cast. There are two with Clay. One of him with castmates Rick Holmes, Bradley Dean, Wally Dean and Michael Siberry and another with the Ensemble.

Clay Aiken posted a plea for help in the UNICEF Fieldnotes blog. He is asking us all to join him in making a monthly pledge to help UNICEF protect the world's children from diseases like malaria, measles or tetanus. Clay says:

So today, despite these tough times, I decided to help save children's lives and make a monthly pledge to the U.S. Fund for UNICEF. Even a small amount makes a huge difference. For instance, $5 a month (about 15¢ per day) can ensure five children are protected from measles.

Did Clay Aiken Get Paid for the People Magazine Article?

The latest news about the article in People magazine about Clay Aiken is that he got paid a measly $500,000 for the article and pictures about being a gay father.

MSNBC reported:

Exclusive photos of Clay and his son, Parker, went for an underwhelming amount compared to the multimillion-dollar price tag that accompanies a Jennifer Lopez or Jolie-Pitt agreement. Aiken’s deal cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $500,000 according to several sources privy to the negotiations (a rep for People said “We don’t comment on the specifics of any deals”).

When questioned about it on the Clay Aiken Official Fan Club messageboard, Jaymes Foster adamantly stated that they in no way, shape or form received compensation for either the article or pictures.

Jossip now claims that they have the real facts behind the story:

The story behind Clay Aiken's coming out cover for People goes something like this: Lots of magazines were in the running for the photo exclusive, but People outbid them all for a cool $500,000. That's the way MSNBC's The Scoop reported it last week, and that's the story Page Six carried this morning.

Except as our sources tell it — and these are the type of sources who were, let's say, involved in the actual transaction — OK! didn't have a shot in hell at the pictures. In fact, no tabloid did. Not Us Weekly, not Star, and certainly not In Touch or Life & Style.

Despite what OK! might have you believe, the only way Clay's coming out would be told was in the pages of People....

Therefore, there was no bidding war for the story. Between that and Jaymes Foster's statement, I think we can come to the conclusion that Clay Aiken and Jaymes Foster did not receive any compensation for the article.

Good Morning America has posted a video of Clay Aiken's interview this morning with Diane Sawyer. He talks about his decision to talk about being gay, about telling his family, and about having the baby with Jaymes Foster. Be sure to watch Good Morning America tomorrow morning to see the second part of this interview.

In his first television interview since revealing he is gay, Clay Aiken told "Good Morning America" that after the birth of his son it was "time to let the guard down."

"I can't raise a kid and teach him how to lie, teach him to hide things. I can't raise a kid and teach him to keep secrets," Aiken told Diane Sawyer. "And at the same time, I also don't ever want to raise him in an environment where it's not OK for him to be exactly who he is, no matter what."
